EIN (Tax ID): When You Need One and How to Apply
An EIN is your business tax ID number. It is free to get and essential for banking, taxes, and employment.
What is an EIN?
An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a nine-digit number that the IRS assigns to your business for tax purposes. It's also known as a Tax ID Number, Federal Tax ID, or Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
Think of it as a Social Security Number for your business. While individuals use an SSN, businesses use an EIN to identify themselves to the IRS, banks, and other entities.
Note
EINs are free. The IRS will never charge you to get an EIN. Beware of third-party websites that charge a fee to "apply for an EIN" on your behalf.
When You Need an EIN
Your LLC needs an EIN if you:
- Have or plan to hire employees
- Have more than one member (multi-member LLC)
- Choose to be taxed as a corporation (S-Corp or C-Corp)
- File tax returns for employment, excise, or alcohol, tobacco, and firearms taxes
Even if not technically required, you should get an EIN to:
- Open a business bank account (most banks require it)
- Keep your SSN private (use your EIN instead of your SSN on forms)
- Build business credit
- Work with certain vendors that require a tax ID
